Hampton Roads hunkered down and waited for a walloping today by Hurricane Irene, which is expected to be the most destructive hurricane to hit the region in years. Hurricane-force winds of about 90 miles per hour should start hitting North Carolina's Outer Banks around 8 a.m. today, according to Nick Fillo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
